Course day
What to expect on your course day
No surprises. Here is how a day with us runs, from arrival to evaluation, whether it is your first time around firearms or not.
Arrival
Classes are held at Leduc Fish & Game Association, 4807 49 Ave, Leduc. Doors open 30 minutes before class (8:30 a.m. for a 9:00 a.m. start). Please arrive at least 15 minutes early so we can register everyone at 8:45 a.m. and start promptly at 9:00 a.m. Bring government-issued photo identification.
The classroom portion
We work through the official course material in plain language, with the emphasis on understanding rather than memorising. You will be asked questions, and you can ask them freely — with up to 12 students per instructor there is time for it.
Hands-on practice
All practical work uses inert training firearms provided for the class. No live ammunition is used or permitted. You will handle, load, unload, carry and store the firearms repeatedly under instructor supervision until the steps feel automatic.
Evaluations
The day finishes with a written test and a practical handling test. We practise the exact practical sequence in advance, so the evaluation is a repeat of what you have already done.
You need at least 80% on each test to pass. If you do not pass, see the CFSC course page for how rewrites work.
Want a head start? The official student handbook is free to download; see CFSC course prep.
After the course
Course completion is a safety certification, not a licence. The next step is your PAL application to the Canadian Firearms Program. See how to get a PAL in Alberta.
Accessibility
Accommodations are welcome
If you need a reading accommodation, mobility support, a language consideration or anything else, tell us before the course and we will do what we reasonably can.
