FAQ

Frequently asked questions

If your question is not answered here, ask us directly — we would rather you booked the right course.

Do I need the CFSC to apply for a PAL?

Yes. The Canadian Firearms Safety Course is required for a non-restricted Possession and Acquisition Licence application. Completing the course does not issue a licence on its own — the Canadian Firearms Program makes all licensing decisions.

How much does a PAL cost?

The federal application fee as of March 31, 2026 is $70.38 for a non-restricted licence and $93.84 for restricted. Fees change every March 31 and are non-refundable. This is separate from the cost of the safety course.

How long does it take to get a PAL?

First-time applicants have a minimum 28-day waiting period, and every application goes through background checks. Complete every section of the form; incomplete applications are the most common cause of delay.

How long is a PAL valid?

Five years. Renewals of a licence that has not expired can be done online through the RCMP.

Who can be my references and photo guarantor?

You need two references who have known you for at least 3 years and are 18 or older; your spouse or partner cannot be one. Your photo guarantor must have known you for at least 1 year and be 18 or older, and can be one of your references or your spouse or partner.

I have never handled a firearm. Is this course right for me?

Yes. Most of our students arrive with no experience at all. The course starts from the basics, and every practical exercise is instructor-led with inert training firearms.

What does the course cost?

CFSC is $160 + GST, CRFSC is $150 + GST, and the combined CFSC + CRFSC package is $275 + GST. Prices are shown with GST added at checkout.

Do I need the CFSC before taking the CRFSC?

Successful CFSC completion or a valid PAL is required before the restricted course, and CRFSC participants must be 18 or older. If you book the combined package, the CFSC portion runs first.

How many students are in a class?

We keep classes small, with up to 12 students per instructor. Occasionally a larger class runs with a second instructor, so everyone still gets plenty of hands-on time and questions answered.

What happens if I need to change my course date?

More than 72 hours before your class, you can move to another date at no charge (up to two free changes) or take a course credit for the full amount paid, including GST. Within 72 hours, or after your two free changes, half the fee is forfeited and the other half becomes a credit. A no-show forfeits the full fee, and cancellations are not refunded in cash. See our cancellation and rebooking policy for the full details.

What is the minimum age for the CFSC?

12. Students aged 12 to 17 can take the CFSC with written consent from a parent or legal guardian, who books with us directly; students under 18 cannot be registered online. The restricted course (CRFSC) is for adults 18 and older.

What should I bring?

Government-issued photo identification, something to write with, and a lunch or money for lunch. A full what-to-bring list is confirmed in your booking and reminder emails.

Does the CRFSC let me buy a handgun?

No. The course is a safety certification. Federal rules on individual handgun acquisition have changed and continue to change, and licensing decisions rest with the Canadian Firearms Program. Always check the current official guidance.

Where are the courses held?

At the Leduc Fish & Game Association building, 4807 49 Ave, Leduc, Alberta. We regularly serve students from Leduc, South Edmonton, Edmonton and surrounding communities.

Can you run a course for our organization?

Yes. We deliver off-site group training for groups of 8 to 12 participants. Send us the details through the group training page and we will get back to you.

What happens if I do not pass?

You need at least 80% on both the written and practical tests to pass. If you do not pass a test, you may rewrite it once at no charge, no sooner than the next day and within 7 days. If more than 7 days pass, or if you do not pass the rewrite, the full course must be retaken at the regular price. Contact us to arrange a rewrite.

Is there anything to read before the course?

It is optional. The official Canadian Firearms Safety Course Student Handbook is free to download from the Government of Canada; the link is on our CFSC course prep page. This is the 2014 edition. Some laws have changed since it was published; your instructor covers the current rules in class.
